Neon Manufacturing

Refinery processing unit URNG-25

Neon production at CJSC ColdGasEngineering is based on the URNG-25  refinery processing unit designed and manufactured by the company. The processing unit is designed for the production of high-purity neon from a neon-helium mixture obtained at air separation plants of metallurgical industries.
The mixture enters in steel cylinders or special containers (tub trailer) under pressure.
Typical neon-helium mixture composition:

  • the volume fraction of neon, not less than 62%;
  • the volume fraction of helium – 18 – 25%;
  • the volume fraction of nitrogen, not more than – 10%;
  • the volume fraction of hydrogen, not more than — 4%.

Neon corresponds to a 6.0 grade 6.0

All neon produced by us corresponds to the purity 6.0 grade (99.9999%).
By special order, we produce products of 7.0 grade (99.99999%), for individual impurity components reaching ppb units.
Neon is pumped by a membrane compressor:

  • into steel (aluminum) cylinders with a capacity from 1 L to 50 L;
  • or in special containers (tube trailer).

The maximum pump-in pressure is 200 kgf/cm2.
Productivity of the processing unit is up to 40 m3 of processed mixture per hour*
* flow rate is based on “normal” conditions: pressure 101.325 kPa (760 mmHg) and temperature 293.16 K (20 °C).
The technological scheme of the processing unit allows you to have an arbitrarily large resource of work.
The real annual neon manufacturing plant capacity is 220 000 m3/year.

Configuration of the refinery processing unit

  1. Structurally, the processing unit is a set of machinery, compressors, and ancillary equipment connected by pipelines with the necessary fittings.
  2. In the production line, a purification unit and a rectification unit are installed in series. Other machinery and equipment are located separately according to the project of the manufacturing workshop.
    The system of control and management of the processing unit provides the possibility of monitoring the technological process, control of units, and remotely controlled fittings.
  3. The gas testing laboratory provides:
  • incoming analysis of raw materials (neon-helium mixture) supplied for processing;
  • technological analysis from the processing unit points;
  • certification analysis of manufactured neon (according to the table listed below).

Operation of the refinery processing unit

  1. Obtaining high-purity neon from a neon-helium mixture is carried out by the method of low-temperature rectification. A stripping stream from the rectification unit with a neon content of 10–15% (the rest is helium) is removed from the unit and supplied as a raw material to the helium production unit. Purification of the mixture from all impurities is carried out by chemical and adsorption methods in the purification section of the processing unit. Structurally, the purification section consists of two identical technological lines, installed parallel to each other. This design allows you to have an arbitrarily long service life of the purification section, since during the operation of one line, the other goes through the preparation stage. Then their switching follows. Filters with a filtration depth of 60 microns are installed at the outlet of the purification section.
  2. For providing the temperature mode of the rectification unit operation, a separate high-pressure neon throttling cycle with liquid nitrogen pre-cooling is used.
  3. The feed of the processing mixture is carried out through discharge ramps. Each of the ramps has the ability to connect 10 cylinders. It is possible to connect special containers (tube-trailer) to each of the ramps. Ramps work alternately or together. The mixture pressure is reduced by a pressure reducer
  4. The product (neon) outlet is carried out by membrane compressors into filling ramps. Each of the ramps has the ability to connect 15 cylinders.It is possible to connect special containers to each of the ramps (tube trailer). Ramps work alternately or together.
